Chicago, My Kind of Town! 02/27/2008

It is common for most people to think that the typical American retiree picks up their belongings and heads south to the land of fun and sun after retirement.

Places like Arizona and Florida have long been favorites for many people heading south to escape the colder winters of the north. While there will always likely be throngs of retirees who head south after retirement, many are choosing to stay close to home. In fact, only about one-third of retirees will actually move when they reach retirement age and only about five percent actually leave the state.

The majority of retirees who choose to stay close to home note that friends and family are there primary motivators. People who have long established friendships near home find it difficult to part ways with their current friends in the hope they will make new ones in their next location. In addition, many retirees realize that right about the onset of retirement, grandchildren enter into their lives. The thought of living thousands of miles away from grandchildren forces many seniors to think twice about heading out of state when they retire.

Still, others do choose to head south after quitting work. For many people, they find a great home and settle down for many years after moving south. Yet, a growing trend in recent years involves an ever increasing number of people heading back north after several years in a southern state. Most of the people who move back to their original home states acknowledge a variety of factors that encourage them to move back. Among those factors, heat, humidity, family and friends seem top the list.

Though 55+ communities were popularized in southern states, many 55+ communities have emerged in northern states in recent years. States like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio all now boast adult communities. Many of these communities are filled with all of the amenities one would expect in a Florida or Arizona adult community.

Chicago, IL is home to nearly a dozen active adult communities spread throughout the suburbs. Communities in Chicago range from less than 200 homes to over 5,000. While residents of these communities don’t see the same weather as they would if they moved south, they are still getting the lifestyle they desire in a community that is close to home and near their loved ones.
