Center History The Lansdowne-Baltimore Highlands Senior Center is one in a network of 20 senior centers in Baltimore County operated by the Baltimore County Department of Aging. A full-range of opportunities is available to area residents 60 years of age and older. The Lansdowne-Baltimore Highlands Senior Center's roots date back to 1974 when a small group of senior citizens decided to meet, share experiences, enjoy a meal together and enlarge their circle of friends. From 1974 to 1977, these pioneer members met at the Lansdowne Baptist Church on Alma Road. In 1977 the group of seniors joined the Baltimore County Department of Aging's network of senior centers as the Lansdowne Senior Center. In 1977, the expanding center moved into the Lansdowne United Methodist Church on Laverne Avenue, which hosted the center until the end of 1988. In January of 1989, the Department of Aging proudly opened the doors of a new facility at the current location on Third Avenue. This modern facility enabled the senior center to more fully integrate itself within the community and expand its program and service offerings. The current facility was officially dedicated on April 24, 1989 as the Lansdowne-Baltimore Highlands Senior Center and serves the southwest Baltimore County communities of Lansdowne, Baltimore Highlands, Arbutus, Halethorpe, Relay and Riverview. The center also attracts participants from the nearby communities of Baltimore City, Anne Arundel County and Howard County. The Lansdowne-Baltimore Highlands Senior Center earned national accreditation in October of 1999 from the National Council on Aging’s National Institute of Senior Centers.
